Gary is a PADI Master Instructor that earned his Open Water Diver Certification in 1977 and has been diving since then in many parts of the world. He is also a SSI Dive Control Specialist Instructor. Gary can teach over 22 specialties as well as being a Poseidon Rebreather Instructor in the PADI system and the SSI system. In addition to teaching recreational diving he is a Tec Trimix Open Circuit and Tec Trimix Evolution Rebreather Diver.
Gary grew up on a farm in Iowa but had a desire or be by the sea at a very young age. After graduating from the University of Iowa he was commissioned in the US Navy and trained as a Naval Aviator (Pilot) and later became a jet flight Instructor. Following this he was chosen to attend Dental School and earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS). He then finished a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery becoming board certified in that specialty in 1985, remaining in the Navy for a total of 20 years until his retirement from the military. Upon his retirement from the Navy he was in solo private practice for 10 years. Other interests include travel and sport motorcycle riding/touring both in the USA and Europe.
He enjoys teaching scuba diving because of the adventure, physical activity, and the opportunity to meet and interact with a wide variety of people. Diving is an activity where there is always more to learn and improve.
